چکیده

Rotor Synthesis and Surface Mounting Considerable effort has gone into the synthesis of rotors and their mounting on surfaces. In addition to the commercially available analogs of rotors 1 4 lacking the triple bond [such as ClCH2-Si(OEt)3], and the easily synthesized molecule 2, all of which have small dipole moments but a small footprint, permitting high surface densities, we have worked on structures of the types 5 8, with much higher dipoles. The free acetylene of 5 has been synthesized in five steps from veratrole, but the direct addition of the triethoxysilyl group needed for surface binding (to quartz) is difficult (deprotonation proceeds well but silane reagents seem to trigger phthalocyanine formation). Currently, we are synthesizing compounds 6 and 7 in a way that avoids this problem.

Dipolar and nonpolar altitudinal molecular rotors mounted on an Au(111) surface.

We describe the preparation of a compound whose molecules consist of two metal sandwich stands carrying tentacles with affinity to metal surfaces and holding an axle that carries a dipolar or a nonpolar rotator. The dipolar rotor exists as three pairs of enantiomers, rapidly interconverting at room temperature. When mounted on a gold surface, each molecule represents a chiral altitudinal rotor,...

The dielectric response of chloromethylsilyl and dichloromethylsilyl dipolar rotors on fused silica surfaces

We have measured the dielectric response of monolayer films of surface mounted chloromethyland dichloromethylsilyl dipolar rotors on fused silica at frequencies in the 1 kHz range and temperatures from 4 to 300 K. The torsional potentials, calculated from molecular mechanics, show an asymmetrical three-fold barrier to rotation with a barrier height sufficient to hinder motion of the rotor at ex...

Surface-mounted altitudinal molecular rotors in alternating electric field: single-molecule parametric oscillator molecular dynamics.

Molecular dynamics simulations of the response to oscillating electric field elicited from an altitudinal dipolar molecular rotor mounted on the Au(111) surface and previously studied experimentally in static fields show unidirectional rotation in one of the three pairs of conformational enantiomers. The simulations are based on the universal force field and take into account electronic frictio...

Dipolar rotor-rotor interactions in a difluorobenzene molecular rotor crystal

In this paper, we characterize the rotational dynamics and observe rotor-rotor interactions within a crystalline, three-dimensional array of dipolar molecular rotors. The rotating portion of each rotor molecule consists of a dipolar fluorine-substituted phenyl group. The phenyl rotors are connected by acetylene linkages to bulky triphenyl methyl groups which are held rigid in the crystal lattic...

Dielectric response of a dipolar molecular rotor crystal

We report the results of the dynamics of a three dimensional lattice of dipolar molecular rotors where the unit cells consist of a dipolar phenylene ring rotating about an axle stabilized by stationary triphenyl groups. The molecules are synthesized such that the lattice may be customized to elicit novel and useful physical phenomena. Using dielectric spectroscopy and H NMR, we demonstrate rapi...
